3 Tips to Protecting Your Computer
You acknowledge how important it is to keep your computers protected from online hackers and those who’ll physically steal your personal information.
But in this age of constant threat, what practical steps can you take to keep your computer and its content safe?
Whether your computer is mainly for work, personal activities, or both, these tips make it very hard for anyone to get unauthorized access to your computer!
#1. Keep your system and software security up to date
Imagine working on a project you have to present the following day, and a notification pops up telling you to run the latest security update. You’d most likely ignore it.
We know, system and security updates can be annoying, but they are crucial to the smooth operation of your computer. In addition, these updates fix bugs and come with the latest security patches, preventing hackers from exploiting vulnerabilities to gain access to your computer.
While there’s usually the option to schedule an update for another time, it’s best to update immediately for optimal security. However, be wary of downloading third-party updates as they may be fraudsters’ tricks to get you to click a link or leave sensitive information.
#2. Turn on your firewall
Firewalls prevent unauthorized access by acting as a barrier between your computer or network and unauthorized internet users. While you’re on the internet, your computer’s firewall is active, looking out for threats and preventing them from gaining access to your computer and spreading between devices.
Modern operating systems come with an inbuilt firewall. In Windows, you can turn it on by navigating to Control Panel>System and Security>Windows firewall. You can also type in “firewall” in the search bar, after which you click on Windows Firewall>Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
You can also choose to purchase a firewall separately if your OS doesn’t have one or for added security.
#3. Install anti-virus and
anti-malware software
From viruses to adware, ransomware, and trojan, threats abound on the internet. Using anti-virus and anti-malware software can help you stay protected whenever you’re on the internet.
Anti-virus work to detect and prevent viruses while anti-malware protects against broad threats, including spyware, trojan, and even email phishing.
While there are many free anti-viruses and anti-malware software, paid options are more effective and do not cost much. With new threats cropping up every day, keeping your software updated regularly is also essential.
